Chaurchan festival drives surge in Banana sales in Mahottari

MAHOTTARI: With the Chaurchan festival approaching, the demand for bananas has surged. This fruit is traditionally offered to the Moon during the festival celebrations.

Most marketplaces are now bustling with banana sales, reflecting its importance in the festival. However, there is currently a shortage of the fruit.

The Moon is worshipped during the festival, which falls on the Chauthi of Shuklapaksha according to the lunar calendar. The main observance is set for this coming Friday.

Chaurchan is a significant cultural event for the Mithila community. In anticipation of the festival, farmers and traders have flocked to marketplaces to conduct transactions related to agricultural products.

This presents a lucrative opportunity for banana farmers to sell their produce and earn income.

Satya Narayan Yadav, a farmer from Ram Nagar, Bhangaha-4, reported earning Rs 200,000 from selling bananas for the festival. Yadav has cultivated bananas on 10 katthas of land.

The Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Mahottari district has projected that transactions involving bananas during the festival will reach Rs 5 million.

In addition to ripe bananas, even unripe bananas are being sold for the occasion.

Local authorities have been urged to implement strict monitoring to ensure quality and fair practices.
