Home Minister Lamichhane calls for amendments to disaster management laws

KATHMANDU: Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane emphasized the urgent need to revise laws pertaining to disaster management, stating that saving citizens’ lives during disasters has become overly complex.

Addressing the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Executive Committee meeting at the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) on Monday, DPM Lamichhane urged that activities related to disaster management should not be hindered by bureaucratic hurdles.

He pledged the government’s commitment to streamlining legal and procedural complexities if they prove to be obstacles, urging prompt reporting of any such issues.

The Home Minister directed relevant bodies to resolve these complexities before the onset of this year’s monsoon season, emphasizing that safeguarding citizens’ lives takes precedence over all else.

He stressed the importance of providing essential training for journalists and volunteers, recognizing the risks they face when venturing into hazardous areas.

Additionally, Minister for Federal Affairs and General Administration Bhanu Bhakta Joshi assured full support from the ministry for disaster management initiatives.

Likewise, Minister for Health and Population Pradeep Yadav pledged coordination with the Home Minister to enhance health-related preparedness.

The meeting, chaired by the Home Minister, approved the Monsoon Preparedness and Response National Action Plan-2081 with amendments.
