KATHMANDU: During the ‘zero hour’ session in the House of Representatives today, lawmakers collectively raised concerns over several pressing issues, directing the government’s attention towards the ongoing problem of power outages (‘load-shedding’) in numerous districts.
Highlighting the plight faced by residents in the Tarai districts due to power cuts initiated by the Nepal Electricity Authority (NEA) amidst rising temperatures, lawmaker Dhawal Shumsher Janga Bahadur Rana implored the government to ensure regular power supply, particularly during the scorching heat, to alleviate further hardship for the people.
Meanwhile, Dr. Toshima Karki highlighted the water scarcity in Lalitpur’s election constituency number 3, despite the area’s proximity to the Melamchi Water Supply Project’s reservoir boasting an 18-million-liter storage capacity.
Additionally, Deepak Bahadur Singh called attention to the Republic Markers near Narayanhiti Palace, lamenting their closure to the public five years after construction.
Other lawmakers voiced diverse concerns, ranging from reduced grants to local levels, road construction urgencies, storm and hailstone damage assessments, farmer issues, waste management challenges, and water scarcity in Madhes.
Moreover, inquiries were raised regarding the Ministry of Land Management, Cooperatives, and Poverty Alleviation’s activities, urging transparency and effectiveness in poverty alleviation efforts.
Lastly, lawmakers Dilli Raj Panta, Tara Lama Tamang, and Teju Lal Chaudhary emphasized the urgent need to address prison overcrowding, delayed subsidy disbursement to sugarcane farmers, and persistent power disruptions in the Tarai/Madhes region, respectively, urging swift government intervention to tackle these pressing issues.
