KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) Vice President and lawmaker Dhanraj Gurung expressed doubts regarding the government’s ability to achieve its revenue collection target in the upcoming fiscal year.

During the general deliberations on the estimations of government income (revenue) and expenditure in the fiscal year 2081-82 BS (2024-25) in a House of Representatives (HoR) meeting today, Gurung questioned whether revenue collections in the next year would meet the target of over Rs 1,260 billion.

He suggested that the government implement the announcement to promote cannabis farming for medicinal use using legal instruments, estimating that it could generate revenue of Rs two billion annually.

Gurung also proposed branding homemade products to contribute to revenue collection.

Furthermore, he highlighted the potential of earning an additional Rs two billion through the commercial farming of 736 varieties of herbs found in Nepal.

Gurung advised the government to focus on promoting religious tourism and explore new sources of production to address the budget deficit.

He emphasized the need for effective implementation of the budget, stressing the importance of a realistic approach in assessing the budget and its implementation aspect.
