Rain and snowfall expected in many parts of the country starting Sunday, caution advised

KATHMANDU: The weather is anticipated to change in various locations across Nepal, leading to rainfall and snowfall on Sunday.

The Meteorological Forecasting Division has issued a special bulletin providing information on precipitation and snowfall in different regions. The bulletin emphasizes the need for caution due to the anticipated increase in intensity.

According to meteorologist Govinda Jha from the Meteorological Forecasting Division, on Sunday, snowfall is expected in the Himalayan and high mountainous regions of Sudurpashchim, Karnali, Gandaki, Bagmati, and Koshi provinces.

The hilly regions of Sudurpashchim, Karnali, Lumbini, Gandaki, Bagmati, and Koshi provinces are likely to experience rainfall. However, minimal impact is expected in the Terai and eastern Tarai districts.

“When observing the nature of the current system, similar conditions to the rainfall and snowfall that occurred last Thursday are likely, but it will be more intense in the Terai and Madhes regions,” says the meteorologist division.

Currently, Nepal is under the influence of a western disturbance. The precipitation system is situated within the western region, which entered on Saturday. It is expected to expand and intensify, leading to increased rainfall and snowfall.

This effect will be visible until Monday. Starting from Monday evening, the weather is expected to gradually improve, as stated by the meteorologist in the information provided.

Impact on daily life

The weather system bringing rainfall and snowfall is affecting the temperature, leading to a significant drop.

The cold conditions are likely to impact health, mountain climbing, aviation, and daily life activities. Therefore, the Meteorological Forecasting Division urges the public to exercise caution.

The temperature drop is expected to commence from Saturday. In Jumla, the minimum temperature is forecasted to be around minus six degrees Celsius, minus five in Jomsom, and minus two in Jiri. On Saturday evening, Kathmandu recorded a minimum temperature of 3.3 degrees Celsius.

Janakpur is one of the warmest places, with a minimum temperature of 10 degrees Celsius.

Previously, on January 18, there was rainfall and snowfall in Sudurpashchim, Karnali, Gandaki, Lumbini, and Bagmati provinces.

On the same day, the Meteorological Forecasting Division had issued a warning, anticipating rainfall and snowfall on Saturday and Sunday, urging caution.
