SC to pass verdict on Govinda Raj Joshi graft case on July 28
The Supreme Court is scheduled to pass its verdict on the corruption case against former Minister and Nepali Congress leader Govindaraj Joshi on July 28. A joint bench of judges Binod Sharma and Bal Krishna Dhakal concluded the hearing on Sunday and announced that the final verdict would be delivered on July 28. The Commission for Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) had filed a corruption case against Joshi and his family members at the Special Court on January 2, 2004.
CB Lama accused of over 1.5 billion rupees cooperative fraud, over 900 complaints filed
The police made Chandra Bahadur Tamang alias CB Lama, allegedly involved in a cooperative-related fraud worth 1.5 billion public in Kathmandu on Sunday. During a press conference held at the Kathmandu Valley Crime Division on Sunday, SSP Sanu Ram Bhattarai disclosed that Lama has been arrested on charges of defrauding over 1.5 billion rupees from the depositors of Pashupati Saving and Credit Cooperative and its subsidiary operations.
UML voices dissatisfaction over budget: Vice Chairman Paudel criticizes lack of consultation
The primary ruling party, CPN-UML, has expressed dissatisfaction with the budget preparation process for the fiscal year 2081/82, asserting that the Finance Minister neglected to seek advice or suggestions from coalition partners. During Sunday’s parliamentary session, former Finance Minister and UML Vice-Chair Bishnu Prasad Paudel voiced dissatisfaction with the deliberation on the presented Appropriation Bill. He highlighted deficiencies and issues in the budget, expressing dismay that the Finance Minister disregarded all advice provided.
SC halts Home Minister Lamichhane’s volunteer traffic enforcement plan
The Supreme Court (SC) has intervened to halt Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane’s decision to authorize volunteers to enforce traffic rules on the roads. Issuing an interim order on Sunday, the apex court has temporarily suspended the immediate implementation of the Home Minister’s directive. Earlier, Home Minister Lamichhane had instructed the police to engage traffic rule violators as volunteers on the streets to help them recognize their mistakes.
Madhes: Political struggle intensifies as govt hangs in balance
he political situation in Madhes Province is witnessing heightened tensions as parties maneuver to either sustain or overthrow the current government. Madhes Chief Minister Saroj Kumar Yadav, representing the Janata Samajwadi Party Nepal (JSP-N) under the leadership of Upendra Yadav, finds himself at the center of this power struggle. Following the split of JSP-N, Upendra Yadav withdrew from the central government, aligning with the opposition. The emergence of JSP under the leadership of Ashok Rai sparked efforts to establish a new government in Madhes.
SC grants priority to Home Minister Lamichhane’s case, next hearing on June 10
The Supreme Court (SC) has taken the case filed against Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane seriously, granting it priority in hearing and proceeding on Sunday. The single bench of Justice Til Prasad Shreshta granted Lamichhane’s case priority in hearing and scheduled its next hearing on June 10. The Supreme Court has instructed both parties to engage in discussions regarding issuing an interim order promptly, indicating a swift resolution to the dispute.
Gold traders protest against government tax hike
Gold traders staged a demonstration at Maitighar in Kathmandu on Sunday, protesting against the recent increase in customs duty imposed by the government and the syndicate that has been in place for the last 14 years. During the protest in the capital, the agitated dealers called for the lifting of the recently imposed tax hike and the longstanding syndicate system.
Probe panel to record statements from Home Minister Lamichhane and GB Rai: Gagan Thapa
Gagan Thapa, the General Secretary of Nepali Congress (NC), stated that the parliamentary investigation committee formed to probe the cooperative fraud case will record statements from all involved parties. Addressing the parliament meeting on Sunday, Thapa confirmed that the probe panel will undoubtedly summon GB Rai, owner of Gorkha Media, and Home Minister Rabi Lamichhane to document their involvement. Thapa further clarified that the transfer of money from Surya Darshan Cooperative and other cooperatives to Gorkha Media is illegal.
