Supreme Court embarks on mission to clear cases older than five years

CHITWAN: Chief Justice (CJ) Bishwambhar Prasad Shrestha has announced a dedicated mission by the Supreme Court (SC) to clear cases older than five years, reaffirming the judiciary’s commitment to expedite the justice delivery process.

In a discussion with journalists, CJ Shrestha disclosed that the SC has effectively tackled the backlog, with only 40 cases remaining older than 10 years.

Furthermore, he emphasized ongoing efforts to address cases registered five years ago.

The CJ highlighted the implementation of the case management system as instrumental in reducing the backlog, citing cases dating back to 2067 BS as among the oldest being addressed.

Acknowledging the surge in caseload, CJ Shrestha attributed it partly to recent legislative enactments in the country.

He underlined the initiation of reforms within the SC and emphasized the management of officials and judges based on caseload distribution across courts.
