KMC to go for segregated waste management for enhanced efficiency

KATHMANDU: In a renewed effort for effective waste management, the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has decided to exclusively handle segregated waste.

The initiative will begin with the immediate classification and separation of waste at source in ward no 5, 12, and 27, as announced by the KMC.

Rabinman Shrestha, Chief of KMC’s Department of Environment Management, mentioned that the collection and management of segregated waste will eventually extend to all 32 wards of the Metropolis.

Despite having urged residents to classify waste into biodegradable and non-biodegradable categories over a year and a half ago, the KMC is restarting the process due to the lack of effective implementation.

In addition to waste classification and collection, the KMC is actively searching for land in Bancharedanda for the organized disposal of the classified waste. Simultaneously, the KMC will facilitate the sale of recyclable waste materials identified during the waste classification process.

To further enhance public awareness, the KMC plans to educate residents about the benefits and necessity of segregating garbage at its source.
