Human Organ Transplant Centre marks milestone: 1,200 successful kidney transplants in 11 years

BHAKTAPUR: The Human Organ Transplant Centre (HOTC), operating under the Ministry of Health and Population, has etched its name in history by accomplishing 1,200 successful kidney transplants over the last 11 years.

This significant milestone was achieved with the recent kidney transplant, where a 34-year-old woman donated her kidney to her 39-year-old husband, marking the 1,200th successful kidney transplant, as confirmed by the Centre’s executive director and senior transplant surgeon, Dr. Pukar Chandra Shrestha.

Established by the government in 2012, the Centre initially received technical assistance from South Korea for its first successful kidney transplant in 2016.

Over the years, the Centre has evolved into a self-reliant entity, with a team of Nepali surgeons independently conducting transplant surgeries.

Dr. Shrestha shared that the Centre performs four liver transplants consecutively for four days each week. Additionally, the Centre has successfully conducted 18 liver transplant surgeries.

The Human Organ Transplant Centre holds a prominent position, accounting for 80% of organ transplants in Nepal and achieving an impressive 99% success rate in transplant procedures, according to Dr. Shrestha.

This accomplishment signifies a remarkable contribution to the field of organ transplantation in the country.
