KATHMANDU: The Election Commission is actively gearing up for the upcoming by-elections scheduled for the month of Baisakh (April-May), according to Chief Election Commissioner Dinesh Kumar Thapaliya.

Thapaliya mentioned that preparations are set to intensify in the coming week, and the finalized election date will be announced after consultation with the government.

In the upcoming week, the Election Commission plans to present the by-election proposal to Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda,’ as informed by Thapaliya during a media interaction.

He stated, “By-elections for all three levels will be held simultaneously. The compilation of details is in progress, covering tasks such as budget allocation, security arrangements, and updating the voter rolls. After completing preparations in the coming week, we will meet with the government, and further progress will follow.”

Currently, the by-elections are scheduled in the Ilam-2 constituency, where the seat became vacant after the demise of lawmaker Subas Nembang.

Additionally, a by-election is set to take place in Bajhang-1 following the unfortunate demise of Law Minister Prithvi Bahadur Singh in a vehicular accident on June 21 in the Sudur paschim province.

According to the latest updates, a total of 23 constituencies at the local level are also slated for by-elections along with the parliamentary elections.
