Nepali dies while swimming in Hong Kong

KATHMANDU: A Nepali lost his life while swimming at Shek Kwu Chau Island in Hong Kong, local media in Hong Kong reported.

The incident occurred on Monday, and the victim, identified as a 46-year-old man with the surname Gurung, was part of a group from the Shek Kwu Chau Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre.

As per the South China Morning Post, the rehabilitation center’s staff had organized a swimming session around 12:30 in the afternoon for the group.

Approximately 10 minutes into the activity, a friend noticed Gurung floating in the water and promptly informed the rehabilitation staff.

Emergency services, including the Marine Police and a Government Flight Service helicopter, were immediately dispatched to the scene.

Gurung was airlifted to Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital in Chaiwan, where he was pronounced dead at 2 p.m.

The police suspect drowning as the cause of death, and investigations are currently underway.

Some individuals have raised concerns about the circumstances surrounding Gurung’s death, leading to demands for a thorough investigation.

A surveillance camera has been installed at the scene to aid in the ongoing inquiry.

Shek Kwu Chau, an island south of Lantau Island and situated between Cheung Chau and Soko Islands, prohibits entry without proper authorization.

The Shek Kwu Chau Treatment Center, operated by the Society for the Aid and Rehabilitation of Drug Addicts, has been dedicated to providing rehabilitation services for individuals struggling with drug addiction.
