PM Dahal calls for universities’ initiatives to retain youth in Nepal

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ highlighted the crucial role of universities in addressing the issue of brain-drain among Nepali youth and creating an environment that encourages them to stay in the country.

Speaking at the 39th meeting of the Purbanchal University Assembly today, PM Dahal expressed concern over the growing trend of youth seeking opportunities abroad and emphasized the need to reverse this trend.

Dahal directed authorities to develop curricula and academic programs that cater to the aspirations and needs of 21st-century youth.

He stressed the importance of universities in providing practical employment opportunities and entrepreneurial skills to students.

“The government is committed to resolving policy and legal obstacles and coordinating efforts among federal, provincial, and local governments,” Dahal stated, highlighting the government’s support in revising laws to facilitate these initiatives.

In addition to educational reforms, Dahal called for the preservation of micro-research, natural heritage, traditional knowledge, and skills to mitigate climate change effects and conserve biodiversity.

He urged universities to focus on producing skilled human resources capable of driving economic growth through tourism promotion, modernizing agriculture, and adopting agricultural mechanization.

PM Dahal specifically advised Purbanchal University to conduct micro-research on local products such as brown cardamom, tea, Rudraksha, herbal plants, jute, and fruits.

Furthermore, Dahal reaffirmed the government’s commitment to improving healthcare services by establishing a well-equipped hospital and medical college in Gothgaun, Morang, with efforts underway to secure necessary financial resources for these projects.
