Let’s prioritize worker rights and interests: PM Dahal

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ emphasized that achieving social justice and prosperity hinges upon securing the rights and interests of the working class.

Speaking at a program organized by the Joint Trade Union Coordination Centre (JTUCC) on the occasion of the 135th International Workers’ Day, Prime Minister Dahal stressed the collective responsibility of all stakeholders in safeguarding these rights.

“Efforts from all sides are imperative to ensure the rights and interests of workers,” he emphasized, noting that the Constitution already guarantees these rights. “Implementing these constitutional provisions is our foremost obligation.”

Highlighting the government’s commitment to labor rights and its adherence to the statutes and conventions of the International Labor Organization, Prime Minister Dahal assured the provision of ample employment opportunities within the country to curb the exodus of young talent abroad.

“The government is dedicated to harnessing the knowledge, skills, and energy of our youth for national development,” he stated. “While foreign employment remains a significant avenue, efforts must be made to enhance its security, organization, and fairness until domestic employment opportunities are sufficient.”

Prime Minister Dahal underscored the government’s focus on protecting workers’ interests and implementing a contribution-based social security program for Nepali citizens, including those working abroad in various sectors.

“The establishment of a contribution-based social security system forms the bedrock of social justice as envisioned in our constitution,” he remarked. “This program stands as a testament to our commitment to building a socialist-oriented state.”

Recognizing the progress made in extending social security coverage to numerous workers, Prime Minister Dahal reaffirmed the government’s commitment to ensuring the inclusion of all Nepali workers, including those in the informal sector abroad, in the program.

“To realize the national objective of ‘social security for all,’ efforts are underway to guarantee social security for laborers engaged in foreign employment,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of collective action in overcoming challenges in program implementation.
