Kathmandu Metropolis introducing ‘Pelican’ system at 36 school crossings

KATHMANDU: The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) is preparing to install a Pedestrian Crossing System, known as ‘Pelican,’ at 36 locations near schools to facilitate easy road crossing.

Previously, this system was installed in Babarmahal, and now, work has commenced to set it up at 26 community schools and 10 private schools in 36 locations, according to Jagatman Shrestha, a traffic management advisor.

While preparations for installation in these 36 schools are ongoing, plans are also in place to assess the necessity and implement a similar system in other schools as required in the near future.

Increased risks of accidents during school commuting hours have prompted this initiative. This installation aims not only to provide road safety for children but also to educate young road users practically about road safety.

Pedestrians pressing the switch will turn the zebra crossing lights green, indicating to vehicles to halt and allowing pedestrians to cross. After one press, the lights remain green for 30 seconds. In case the pedestrians need it again, they have to wait for another two minutes for next use.

Similar preparations for such a system are also underway in other areas with high pedestrian traffic as seen around school premises. This system is aimed at reducing pedestrian accidents. Once the system is in place, pedestrians will trust the signal, ensuring safe road crossings only when vehicles are halted.
