Gagan Thapa calls Balkumari incident serious negligence

Demands Home Minister's resignation

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) General Secretary Gagan Thapa has strongly criticized the government, labeling Friday’s Balkumari incident as a case of severe negligence, particularly focusing on the tragic death of young job seekers.

Thapa issued a stern warning to the government, emphasizing the need to avoid any further mishaps related to this incident during a state system committee meeting.

“Even if there is temporary sympathy, the family of the victim should not bear the burden alone,” Thapa asserted, urging the government to take immediate corrective actions.

Expressing satisfaction over the formation of a judicial committee, he remarked, “The government met our demand for a judicial committee; now, let’s see if the Home Minister resigns.”

Thapa questioned the jurisdiction of the newly formed committee, raising concerns about its coverage.

He pledged to abide by the leadership’s decision and highlighted the negligence surrounding the Balkumari incident.

Additionally, he scrutinized the Labor Minister, emphasizing the seriousness of the matter and questioning why the Labor Minister did not address the issue of the youhs, who were killed despite preparing for an exam.

Drawing attention to what he termed as “lapses” in the Prime Minister’s Office, Thapa criticized the lack of dialogue in the Secretariat of the Prime Minister.

He asserted that the priorities and focus areas had been communicated to the Prime Minister, but there has been a lack of meaningful engagement.

In a final call to action, Thapa, also a lawmaker, urged the Home Minister to reconsider the prohibition area in Maitighar, emphasizing the need for justification in the face of the Balkumari incident.
