Govt forms high-level committee to investigate Balkumari incident

KATHMANDU; The government has formed a high-level committee, chaired by former High Court Judge Shekhar Paudel, to probe Friday’s incident at Balkumari in Lalitpur, where two youths lost their lives due to police lathicharge and firing.

The committee, which includes former AIG Arun BC and Joint Home Secretary Narayan Prasad Bhattarai, was formed during a cabinet meeting held earlier today, according to government Spokesperson and Communication Minister Rekha Sharma.

Minister Sharma informed the media that the Commission’s primary responsibility is to thoroughly investigate the human and other losses incurred during the Balkumari incident.

The Commission has been allocated one month to conduct a comprehensive study and submit a detailed report.

Furthermore, the committee is tasked with recommending appropriate actions against those found responsible for the unfortunate events.

It should be noted that a previous investigation committee, led by Kathmandu Valley Police Office Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Lalmani Acharya, had been formed to look into the incident.

The incident occurred last Friday during a youth demonstration demanding participation in the Korean language test under EPS, resulting in the untimely deaths of 23-year-old Sujan Rawat from Dailekh and 22-year-old Birender Shah from Achham.

In response to the incident, the government has already decided to provide financial assistance of 10 lakhs each to the families of the deceased youths.
