NC commemorating 47th National Unity and Reconciliation Day

KATHMANDU: Nepali Congress (NC) is marking the 47th National Unity and Reconciliation Day today, honoring the legacy of its founding leader, BP Koirala, who returned on December 30, 2076, with a vision of fostering national unity and reconciliation.

The celebration, recognized as ‘National Unity and Reconciliation’ day, brings together top leaders from various political parties.

The event, scheduled for 1 pm at Nepal Academy in Kamaladi, aims to acknowledge the contributions of leaders involved in multiple democratic movements and supporters of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement.

Nepali Congress has extended invitations to prominent figures from CPN-UML, Maoist Center, Unified Socialist Party, Janata Samajwadi Party, Loktantrik Samajwadi Party, Rastriya Janamorcha, Nepal Majdoor Kisan Party, and others, as part of the commemorative program.

Notably absent from the guest list are parties such as Rastriya Prajatantra Party, Rastriya Swatantra Party, and others.

Min Bishwakarma, the head of the Nepali Congress Publicity Department, clarified that certain criteria were established for party invitations, leading to the exclusion of some.

The historical significance of December 15, 1960, when King Mahendra assumed control and imprisoned then-Prime Minister BP Koirala, underscores the importance of National Unity and Reconciliation Day.

Following BP’s release on October 30, 1968, he spent eight years in exile in India, returning on December 30, 2076, advocating for collaborative efforts between the monarchy and political parties to safeguard the nation.
