Lumpy skin disease outbreak spreads rapidly in Bhaktapur

BHAKTAPUR: The livestock in Bhaktapur district is facing a severe crisis due to the rapid spread of lumpy skin disease.

Officials at the Veterinary Hospital and Livestock Service Centre have expressed deep concern as the disease continues to escalate beyond control, leading to a significant toll on cattle.

As of now, a heartbreaking number of 586 cattle have succumbed to the disease in the district.

Among the affected areas, Changunarayan Municipality has been hit the hardest, with the death of 514 cattle, as reported by Chief of Livestock Service Section, Khadak Kumar Mainali.

This municipality relies heavily on animal husbandry compared to other regions in the district.

The situation is dire, with a total of 1,136 cattle currently infected, and approximately 5,600 others showing signs of being affected.

To address the crisis, the municipality has taken swift action by purchasing 1,500 doses of vaccines.

In a proactive measure, they have vaccinated the cattle by visiting every farmer’s cowshed in the area.

Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, and efforts are being made to control the spread of the disease and prevent further losses among the livestock population.
