Koshi CM Karki seeking vote of confidence today

BIRATNAGAR: Hikmat Kumar Karki, the Chief Minister of Koshi Province, is poised to seek a vote of confidence today.

This decision comes in the wake of the Maoist Center and Janata Samajwadi Party (JSP) withdrawing their support from the government.

On Thursday, Koshi Province CM Karki proposed a vote of confidence in the Provincial Assembly.

However, the meeting, which was adjourned for 30 minutes, was postponed to 11 o’clock Friday.

Chief Minister Karki ruled out the possibility of forming another government and asked Province Assembly members to vote for him if they want to avert mid-term polls.

He also called for the formation of a consensus government.

However, members of the Nepali Congress, Maoist Center, and Unified Socialist Party said that they would not support CM Karki.

However, Janata Samajwadi Party member Nirmala Limbu remained neutral.

On Friday, CM Karki will face a vote of confidence in the Province Assembly, where a majority requires 47 out of the 93 members.

Currently, 46 lawmakers, including 40 from CPN-UML and 6 from Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP), have expressed their support for Karki.

As the Chief Minister requires just one more vote to secure the confidence vote, he is making efforts to garner the necessary support.

Nevertheless, opposition parties are striving to defeat the vote of confidence.

The Nepali Congress (NC) holds 29 seats in the State Assembly, with an additional 12 from the Maoist Center (excluding the Speaker), 4 from the Unified Socialist Party, and one from the Janata Samajwadi Party.

Excluding the Speaker, both sides currently have 46 MPs each. In the event of a tie, the Speaker, Baburam Gautam, an MP elected from the Maoist Center, will cast the deciding vote.

In his pursuit of a vote of confidence, Chief Minister Karki is attempting to sway MPs from other parties.
