KATHMANDU: An agreement has been successfully brokered between the government and the protesting relief teachers, leading to the cessation of their ongoing protests.

The breakthrough agreement was achieved during discussions held at the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology on Friday.

The talks witnessed the presence of prominent figures including Minister of Education Ashok Kumar Rai, Minister of State for Education Pramila Kumari, President of Nepal Relief Teachers Association Central Committee Khemraj Adhikari, and President of Nepal Teachers’ Federation Kamala Tuladhar.

Education Minister Ashok Kumar Rai expressed his satisfaction, confirming that a comprehensive agreement has been reached with the protesting relief teachers. Notably, one of the key outcomes of the negotiations is an agreement to amend the education bill.

Khemraj Adhikari, Chairman of Nepal Relief Teachers Central Committee, elaborated on the agreement, highlighting the five crucial points that have been mutually accepted.

He stated, “It has been agreed to implement a 100 percent internal competition system,” and added, “Temporary service periods will also be calculated at 100 percent.” Consequently, the relief teacher movement has officially come to an end.

The relief teachers had initiated their protest demanding amendments to certain provisions of the Education Bill, which they perceived as detrimental to their interests.

Previously, a protest organized by the Nepal Teachers’ Federation had taken place in Kathmandu from October 3rd to 5th, calling for revisions to the Education Bill. The government had initially reached consensus on six points with the federation. However, the relief teachers felt that these agreements did not adequately address their concerns, leading to the continuation of their agitation.
