KMC intensifies monitoring to enforce plastic bag ban

KATHMANDU: The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) is taking steps to enforce its campaign against the usage of plastic bags below 40 microns.

Since its launch on July 17, the KMC is determined to ensure the success of this initiative through regular monitoring.

To oversee the effective implementation of the campaign, five joint teams consisting of representatives from the KMC Environment Department and the Kathmandu Metropolitan City Police Force will be assigned for monitoring duties.

Chief of KMC Environment Department, Rabin Man Shrestha, confirmed this decision.

The monitoring teams will assess the weight of plastic bags using a micrometer, and necessary actions will be taken against violators using plastic bags and products below 40 microns.

However, certain exceptions apply; products like flowers, garlands, and other decorative items made from plastic will not be permitted for use, as clarified by Shrestha.

KMC has been facing challenges in waste management at landfill sites due to the improper disposal of polythene.

Notably, out of the total garbage produced in the city, 75.5 per cent is biodegradable, while 24.5 per cent is non-biodegradable.

Among the non-biodegradable waste, plastic products constitute 6.5 per cent, as reported by the Department.

With these monitoring efforts in place, KMC is determined to combat plastic pollution and promote a cleaner and more sustainable environment in the city, Shrestha said.
