UN should think on sickle cell anemia: INC Chair Magar

KATHMANDU: Chairperson of the Indigenous Nationalities Commission (INC) Ram Bahadur Thapa Magar has said the United Nations should focus on sickle cell anemia being detected in the indigenous Tharu community in Nepal.

Addressing the twenty-second session of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues at the UN Headquarters, New York, he drew the attention of the UN Permanent Forum to the matter.

The UN should be thoughtful about the Tharu community being suffered from the disease as other indigenous communities across the globe.

There have been challenges in implementing the rights of indigenous nationalities for want of adequate resources, he stressed.

He called for the conservation and protection of skills and knowledge of the community as their knowledge system he said is connected to sustainable development.
