Former Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Nepal Police, Mahesh Bikram Shah, has been pronounced guilty in a corruption case. The Special Court (SC) delivered its verdict today, finding Shah and four accomplices culpable of corruption charges linked to financial irregularities.
Swift license service for Nepali nationals heading abroad
In a significant move, Nepali nationals planning to go abroad for employment, studies, or peacekeeping duties will now experience a rapid and efficient license acquisition process within three days.
According to the Transport Management Department, starting from December 31, individuals seeking a driving license for these purposes can conveniently apply through applydinew.dptm.gov.np.
The streamlined process aims to provide applicants with a smart license within just three days from the submission of their application.
Hearing on Sandeep Lamichhane’s case to continue on Thursday
The ongoing case against cricketer Sandeep Lamichhane in the Kathmandu District Court is scheduled to continue on Thursday as today’s hearing could not be concluded.
Although the session commenced at half-past ten this morning in Judge Shishir Raj Dhakal’s chamber, deliberations remained incomplete, necessitating the continuation of the hearing for the following day.
NEPSE witnesses a double-digit decline on Wednesday
The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) has observed a decline of double digits in its index on Wednesday.
Today, the NEPSE index dropped by 17.23 points to stand at 2070.84.
A total of 14,337,738 shares of 307 companies were traded today, resulting in a turnover of NPR 5,248,782,611.11 in 117,476 transactions.
CIAA reaches SC against Special Court in Chudamani Sharma related corruption case
The Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority (CIAA) has brought the case against Chudamani Sharma, the suspended Director General of the Internal Revenue Department, to the Supreme Court.
This move aims to seek a review of the decision made by the Special Court concerning Sharma’s illegal acquisition of property.
According to CIAA spokesperson Narhari Ghimire, following the alleged illegal acquisition of property by Sharma and his wife, Kalpana Upreti Sharma, declared as ‘unsubstantiated’ by the Special Court on June 1, the CIAA has submitted a plea to the Supreme Court. The plea contends that the special court failed to comprehend the verdict.
Unified Socialist initiates three-day CC meeting
The Central Committee meeting of the CPN (Unified Socialist) has commenced, spanning three days with various crucial agendas on the table. The primary focus of the meeting will be the amendment of the party’s statute and preparations for the upcoming general convention. In a recent secretariat meeting, the party had already reached a consensus to eliminate the age restriction of 70 years. Additionally, the party is gearing up for a national convention scheduled for the next month.
Foreign workers send remittances exceeding Rs 100 billion from Nepal
Foreign laborers working in Nepal have sent remittances surpassing 100 billion rupees back to their home countries between 2000 and 2022, according to a recent World Bank report. This outflow of funds, highlighting the substantial dependence on external income, signifies a significant drain on Nepal’s economy. The study underscores the staggering sum leaving Nepal, equating to over 100 billion Nepalese rupees based on the current dollar value. This substantial drain of financial resources points to the increasing reliance on foreign laborers, impacting the nation’s economic stability.
Gold price up by Rs 200 per tola today
Gold price increased by Rs 600 per tola in the Nepali market today. According to the Nepal Gold and Silver Dealers’ Association, the price of fine gold has been fixed at Rs 120,700 per tola and standard gold is traded at Rs 120,100 per tola. The precious yellow metal was valued at Rs. 120,500 per tola, and standard gold at Rs. 119,900 per tola on Tuesday.
COVID-19 cases detected among India-returnees in Sudurpaschim Province
The cases of COVID-19 have again emerged in the Sudurpaschim Province. The infection rate was nil until sometime ago and the last week, but eight cases have been detected in this week.
Ganesh Saud, an Auxiliary Health Worker stationed at the Health Desk in Gauriphanta along the Nepal-India border said that symptoms were observed in India-returnees. Through antigen tests, eight cases have been identified lately.
Four samples of the infected have been already sent to Kathmandu through the province-based lab to find out the disease variant.
