KATHMANDU: The case filed in the Supreme Court against the Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City, Balendra (Balen) Shah, has been fixed for hearing in the single bench of Justice Prakash Kumar Dhungana on Monday.
Advocate Barsha Kumari Jha filed a writ petition regarding ‘contempt of court’ in the Supreme Court after Metropolitan Chief Shah expressed that he would not even accept the order of the court provided it does not cohere with the spirit of the Constitution.
The hearing on the writ, which was registered on Friday, was fixed on Sunday as well. However, the hearing was not executed yesterday citing the lack of time. It was in Justice Dhungana’s bench yesterday as well.
Balen had announced that the ‘Adipurush’ and any other Hindi film would not be allowed to be screened in Kathmandu unless the controversial remarks in the Adipurush were removed.
After that, giving verdict in a petition filed by the Film Association, the Patan High Court issued a short-term interim order, saying that the decision to ban the screening of Hindi films should not be implemented immediately.
Soon after, Balen, the head of the metropolis, said that he would not obey the court’s order on the question of sovereignty and independence. Balen wrote on social media, “When it comes to the sovereignty and independence of the country, I am not going to obey any law or court.”
Advocate Jha filed a contempt of court writ stating that Balen’s expression was against the constitution and against the rule of law.
