17th Edition of Nepal-India Joint Military exercise commences in Pithoragarh



KATHMANDU: The annual Nepal-India Joint Military Exercise, SURYA KIRAN, has kicked off in Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand, India, marking its 17th edition.

The Nepal Army contingent, represented by the Tara Dal Battalion and consisting of 334 personnel, is actively participating in the joint military exercise, scheduled from November 24 to December 7. The Indian Army contingent, led by a Battalion from the KUMAON Regiment, comprises 354 personnel.

The primary objectives of the exercise include enhancing interoperability in jungle warfare, refining counter-terrorism operations in mountainous terrain, and conducting Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief operations under the United Nations Charter on peacekeeping operations. Notably, the exercise will emphasize the utilization of drones and counter-drone measures, medical training, aviation aspects, and environmental conservation.

Troops from both nations will use this opportunity to boost their operational capabilities, hone combat skills, and strengthen coordination in challenging scenarios. The exercise is expected to facilitate the exchange of ideas and experiences, the sharing of best practices, and the development of a deeper understanding of each other’s operational procedures. Moreover, it aims to achieve shared security objectives and promote bilateral relations between the two friendly neighbors.
