KATHMANDU: Chinese electric vehicle (EV) brands continue to assert their dominance in the Nepalese EV market, with 575 units imported from China in the last two months.

Notably, during the month of Bhadra alone, around 500 units were imported, marking a substantial increase compared to the 83 units imported in Shrawan. The Department of Customs reports a strong presence of BYD and MG brands among the imported Chinese EVs.

In addition to MG and BYD, Nepal also witnesses the import of other Chinese EV brands like Greatwall Motors, Neta V, and Ceres.

India remains another key player in the Nepalese auto import scene, with 290 EVs imported in August. While the import numbers dropped in Shrawan, they rebounded this month, contributing to a total of 317 EV units imported from India over the last two months. Brands like Tata and Citroen are making their mark in the market, offering EVs ranging from 51 to 100 kW.

Despite the government’s efforts to reduce taxes on higher motor power EVs, imports mainly fall within the 51 to 100 kW range. In the current fiscal year’s first two months, the government collected 1.126 billion rupees in taxes from the import of 898 electric cars valued at 2.43 billion rupees.

Interestingly, the number of electric vehicles imported in Nepal this month surpasses that of fuel vehicles. Only 690 units of fuel vehicles have been imported in the first two months of the fiscal year, trailing behind the import of electric vehicles by 288 units.
