KATHMANDU: The Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) is set to introduce a sign language interpreter at its help desk.
This initiative is part of KMC’s commitment to ensuring that no customer faces service deprivation due to communication barriers.
Ram Kumar KC, the Social Committee Coordinator of KMC, emphasizes the special priority placed on achieving inclusive and accessible governance for KMC service recipients.
In addition to the new service at the central office, KMC will offer sign language training to specific target groups based on their needs.
Simultaneously, KMC is reaching out to organizations interested in conducting practical and experimental classes as part of the “Bookless Friday Program” in schools ranging from Grade 1 to 8 within the metropolis.
Currently implemented in 81 public and institutional schools in the metropolis, the Bookless Friday Program aims to provide children with practical knowledge and daily life skills.
Sitaram Koirala, the head of KMC Education Department, underscores the primary objective of the program.
In the ongoing financial year, KMC has allocated a total of Rs. 1.3 billion for education, including separate funds dedicated to the skills development program within the education sector.
