KATHMANDU: Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) Chairman Rajendra Lingden has sternly cautioned the government following its actions in detaining supporters of medical entrepreneur Durga Prasai, who is leading a movement against the republic system.

Lingden strongly objected to the government’s unannounced detention of Durga Prasai, preventing him from holding a scheduled program in Tinkune.

“The government’s actions are undemocratic and violate the fundamental rights of the people. No problem can be solved through protest and oppression,” stated the RPP Chair.

Lingden emphasized that the recent arrests and detentions in Kathmandu are contrary to the citizens’ rights to peaceful movement, assembly, and protest. “Arrests and repression will not resolve the issues. Immediate correction is necessary,” urged Chairman Lingden.

Meanwhile, under strict police security, Durga Prasai affirmed the continuation of the ongoing demonstration in Kathmandu from Thursday. Addressing journalists on Friday morning at his home in Thimi, Bhaktapur, Prasai reiterated his commitment to the movement.

Accusing the government of placing him under “arrest,” Prasai declared plans for a program in Tinkune. However, a significant police presence now surrounds his residence in Bhaktapur.

Supporters of the Prasai group were reportedly arrested by police in Tinkune. The police apprehended activists intending to participate in a pre-planned program led by Prasai. There seems to be a strategy by the police to swiftly detain any group forming in Tinkune, consisting of 4/5 individuals connected to the movement.

Moreover, police actions extended to interrogating pedestrians in the Tinkune area, targeting ordinary citizens moving through the vicinity. The police claimed the organizers did not obtain permission for the planned program in Tinkune, which prompted their intervention.
