NC’s Shekhar faction seeks ‘dignified’ representation in govt

Spokesperson Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat most likely to become Finance Minister

KATHMANDU: Following the decision of the Nepali Congress to join the government, the party’s Shekhar Koirala faction is seeking a “dignified” representation in the government.

NC President Sher Bahadur Deuba is currently in the process of selecting ministers from the party to represent the party in the Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda-led coalition government.

However, there are many aspirants for ministerial positions, and only a few can be selected for government roles.

An NC leader, insisting on anonymity, confirmed this but declined to provide the names of the aspirants.

Meanwhile, on the other hand, the Koirala-led faction has reiterated its position, stating that the party leadership should not overlook them while appointing ministers to the Dahal-led cabinet.

A leader of the Koirala faction emphasized the need for its “fair and dignified representation” in the government, stating that if NC receives seven ministries, they should receive at least three.

Meanwhile, a highly-placed source, who is close to Deuba, revealed that the NC Spokesperson, Dr. Prakash Sharan Mahat, is being considered for the role of Minister of Finance.

Earlier, Gagan Thapa was rumored as the Finance Minister.

Thapa, meanwhile, said he was not interested in taking on a ministerial role at this time, a leader said, suggesting that Dhanraj Gurung, who is also the NC Vice President and a leader of the Koirala faction, is the most likely candidate to represent their faction in the government.

Similarly, another potential candidate from the Koirala faction is Jiwan Pariyar, who is considered to be close to Koirala, the source claimed.
