Police fire 159 tear gas shells, 5 rubber bullets in Balkhu protest



KATHMANDU: Police fired 159 cells of tear gas and 5 rounds of rubber bullets in the demonstration organized by campaigner Durga Prasai in an attempt to control the clashes in Balkhu, Kathmandu on Thursday.

The police’s security plan, detailed in the released implementation report, disclosed the use of water cannons alongside 157 tear gas cells and 5 rounds of rubber bullets during the confrontation.

Preliminary reports indicate damage to police equipment, including 3 megaphones, 11 shields, 3 helmets, and water cannons.

In the aftermath, 23 individuals sustained minor injuries from the protest, with 17 having been treated and subsequently discharged.

Conversely, 5 police officers were injured during the clash, reportedly while attempting to disperse the crowd from Balkhu towards Kuleshwar using a megaphone.

These injured officers are currently undergoing treatment at the Nepal Police Hospital.
