KATHMANDU: In response to the demand made by CPN-UML, the government has agreed to establish a high-level committee tasked with investigating gold smuggling.
The responsibility of outlining the committee’s mandate has been assigned to three leaders.
To decide the ToR of the committee, a three-member task force has been formed, consisting of UML Parliamentary Party Deputy Leader Subash Nemwang, Maoist Center Chief Whip Hitraj Pandey, and Nepali Congress Chief Ramesh Lekhak as members.
Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda’s willingness to address the UML’s demands ensures the removal of obstacles in the Parliament.
The committee’s formation will adhere to the Commission of Inquiry Act 2026BS, with a judge from the High Court designated as its head.
The committee will comprise government lawyers and other members as well.
UML Vice Chairman Subash Nembang mentioned that the procedure for passing the committee’s establishment will be addressed in a cabinet meeting.
“The prime minister assured us that our concerns would be addressed,” Nembang stated following an open discussion. He also noted, “Given the challenges encountered during the gold scandal investigation, the legitimacy of the case itself was being questioned. I believe that the parties have now arrived at a resolution.”
UML’s disruption of the Parliament sessions to advocate for the establishment of a high-level committee for investigating the gold smuggling case has led to this development.
The government’s initial argument, citing the ongoing investigation by the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police, has been superseded by this decision.
