RPP asks PM Dahal to dismiss Culture Minister Kirati over controversial statements on religion

KATHMANDU: The Rastriya Prajatantra Party (RPP) has called for the immediate dismissal of Sudan Kirati, the Minister of Culture, Tourism, and Civil Aviation, following a series of controversial statements related to religion.

The party contends that Minister Kirati’s remarks, made during a public event last Wednesday, warrant his removal from the Ministry.

In his controversial statement, Minister Kirati asserted that “opposing Christianity means opposing the constitution, and those who oppose Christianity will be handcuffed.”

Reacting to these remarks, the RPP has drawn the attention of Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal Prachanda and the ruling coalition, urging them to take decisive action by dismissing Minister Kirati.

Mohan Shrestha, RPP Spokesperson, emphasized the need for action, citing Minister Kirati’s indecent and inflammatory comments on Hindu religion and sentiments circulated through social media.

Shrestha argued that such expressions are unacceptable, particularly given that Nepal is a country where 81 percent of the population identifies as Hindu and 94 percent belong to the “Omkar” family.

Shrestha stated, “As the Culture Minister of a nation with an 81 percent Hindu majority and 94 percent “Omkar” family, Sudan Kirati’s statements are unacceptable. We demand his immediate removal from office and appropriate disciplinary action.”

The RPP spokesperson further highlighted Minister Kirati’s track record, including statements suggesting that those who do not believe in Christianity will be incarcerated.

Shrestha questioned the suitability of a person with such views continuing as the Minister of Culture in a country where the majority follows Hinduism.

“We will bring this matter to the attention of the Prime Minister and the ruling coalition, urging them to relieve him of his post. Furthermore, individuals who disrupt social harmony and propagate communal hatred should be subject to legal consequences,” Shrestha stated.
