KATHMANDU: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has urged the government to take transitional justice to conclusion soon.

Saying conflict survivors have not yet got justice even after 17 years of Comprehensive Peace Accord, the NHRC requested to amend the transitional laws.

The press release issued today by Spokesperson Dr Tikaram Pokharel reads, “Conflict survivors should get justice. The NHRC again draws the attention of the government of Nepal to take the transitional justice to conclusion soon by amending the laws related to transitional justice in accordance with recommendations made earlier by the Commission, verdict of the Supreme Court, commitments made during the meeting with UN Secretary-General and International standard.”

Today, 17 years have passed since the formal end of the decade-long armed conflict in Nepal after CPA between the government of Nepal and the then CPN (Maoist) on Mangsir 5, 2063 BS.

“Following the CPA, different tasks including arms management, adjustment of People’s Liberation Army and promulgation of constitution from Constituent Assembly have been completed. But the right of conflict survivors of getting justice on time has been curtailed due to lack of transitional justice to them”, reads the statement.

Although Truth and Reconciliation Commission and Commission on Investigation on Enforced Disappeared Persons were formed after eight years of CPA, they were not able to provide justice due to lack of enough legal arrangements and willpower of political parties, determines the NHRC.
