LALITPUR: The High Court in Patan is currently engaged in an ongoing hearing of the petition filed by the accused individuals involved in the fake Bhutanese refugee case.
The accused, who are in custody for allegedly attempting to make Nepali citizens into Bhutanese refugees with the intention of sending them to the United States, are seeking relief through the legal proceedings.
Today, legal proceedings commenced, with over 60 legal professionals poised to present arguments on behalf of the defendants.
This marathon session has been scheduled to accommodate the extensive legal representation and address the complexities surrounding the case.
Former minister Bal Krishna Khand, Top Bahadur Rayamajhi, former home secretary Tek Narayan Pandey, former parliamentarian Angtawa Sherpa, Bhutanese refugee leader Teknath Rizal, former chairman of the Hajj committee Shamsher Mian, and advisor to the then home minister Indrajit Rai, among others, are currently in custody awaiting trial.
They have collectively filed an appeal in the High Court, Patan, challenging the district court’s decision to remand them in custody.
Notably, individuals such as Keshav Tuladhar, Tanka Gurung, and Laxmi Maharjan were previously released on bail, while the public prosecutor has raised concerns and filed a petition in the High Court against two individuals, demanding their continued custody.
The charges against the accused include crimes against the state, forgery, organized crime, and fraud, with a staggering claim of Rs 28 crore 81 lakh 74 thousand associated with the case.
The proceedings continue to unfold as the legal teams present their arguments in this high-profile trial.
