Kathmandu Metropolis urges teachers to keep schools open amid protests

KATHMANDU: The Kathmandu Metropolitan City is appealing to teachers not to disrupt the operation of schools through protests.

With protests initiated by the Nepal Teachers’ Association gaining momentum in Kathmandu, the metropolis is calling on educators not to hinder the educational process by closing down schools.

Naveen Manandhar, the spokesperson for the Metropolis, emphasized that it is crucial not to infringe upon students’ right to education by shutting schools down. He stated, “The closure of schools cannot be allowed to compromise students’ right to learn. Schools should remain open. We have requested all schools under the Metropolitan Corporation’s jurisdiction to resume classes tomorrow.”

Furthermore, the Metropolitan Municipality has directed the Education Department to take appropriate measures in the event of school closures.

Spokesperson Manandhar acknowledged that while teachers have the right to protest, they should refrain from using school closures as a means of protest.

This is not the first time that the Kathmandu Metropolitan City has issued warnings to teaching staff about strikes. A previous warning emphasized that schools are zones of peace and that teachers who engage in strikes may face dismissal from their positions.
