Chinese national arrested for suspected gold smuggling in Nepal

KATHMANDU: A Chinese citizen was arrested in connection with the illegal gold seizure at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu on Wednesday.

With this arrest today, number of the arrestees in this connection reached seven. The Chinese national held on Thursday is identified as Jeyung Lyn, according to the Superintendent of Police at TIA, Padam Bahadur Bista.

He is believed to be the key figure involved in the unlawful importation of gold into Nepal. The investigation has centered on him thus far, but further inquiries may lead to more arrests, according to sources.

On Wednesday evening, a joint team from the Revenue Investigation Office and the Armed Police Force conducted a raid at his residence, during which his passport was also confiscated.

He was subsequently apprehended while attempting to process immigration paperwork. The individual had been residing in Nepal for the past 4-5 months.

Authorities have estimated that approximately 80 to 100 kg of gold were recovered from the brake shoes of scooters that had passed through customs at the airport.

Prior to this, six other individuals had been detained in connection with the incident.
