Rare King Cobra sighted in Ghatan, Myagdi

MYAGDI: A King Cobra has been found in a house at Ghatan, Beni Municipality-9 in Myagdi district.

The rare cobra was sighted on the porch at the house of Tek Bahadur Khadka at the place last evening.

A crowd of people has assembled at Khadka’s house to see the rare snake, said Chakra Bahadur KC a local of Ghatan.

Keshav Chokhal, who has been conducting studies and research on birds and wildlife for the last nine years, confirmed that the cobra found at Khadka’s house is the rare King Cobra.

Chokhal has completed Masters in Zoology from Tribhuvan University.

Chokhal said he had also spotted a similar type of cobra in the forest at Koshipani in Ghatan in May 2020.

According to him, the King Cobra, considered a very rare snake in Nepal, is being seen sporadically in the mid-hill region of the country in recent years.

He said the government and the community both should take measures to protect this species of cobra.
