Handicraft fair generates Rs 20 million in transactions

KATHMANDU, Dec 19: The recently concluded handicraft fair in the federal capital, which ran from December 14 to 18, reported a significant transaction amounting to Rs 20 million, according to the Nepal Handicrafts Federation.

Organized with the objective of promoting the international market for Nepali handicrafts, the fair featured active participation from provincial, district handicrafts associations, and commodity associations. A diverse range of products, including jewelry, cotton clothes, pashmina, leather goods, natural fibers, and bamboo items, were showcased during the event.

With nearly 120 sales stalls, the fair aimed to foster commercial relations between national entrepreneurs and handicraft importers, providing a platform for networking among entrepreneurs, importers, and consumers.

During the event, Ram Krishna Chitrakar, the Minister for Industry at Bagmati Province, emphasized the significant contribution of handmade products to the national economy and foreign currency earnings. Recognizing the role of handicrafts in entrepreneurship development and job creation, he underscored the importance of protecting and expanding this sector.

The Nepal Handicrafts Federation revealed that the country exports handicrafts to over 60 countries, with the total market value of handicrafts estimated at Rs 24 billion. Approximately 1.1 million people are engaged in this sector, generating Rs 12 billion in annual exports. The minister’s remarks highlight the crucial role of the handicraft industry in both economic development and job creation within the country.
