Federal Parliament electing Speaker today

UML's Devraj Ghimire and NC's Ishwari Neupane are contenders



KATHMANDU: The election of the Speaker of the Federal Parliament is taking place today (Thursday).

The election will be held on January 19 at the Federal Parliament.

Devraj Ghimire, leader of ruling CPN-UML, has registered his candidacy for the Speaker on behalf of the ruling coalition.

CPN-UML leader Subash Chandra Nemwang supported by Maoist Center’s Hitraj Pandey, and Chairman of Rastriya Swatantra Party Rabi Lamichhane, proposed Ghimire’s name as the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Likewise, Rastriya Prajatantra Party Chairman Rajendra Lingden also supported Ghimire’s name as the Speaker.

The ruling coalition includes CPN-UML, Maoist Center, Rastriya Swatantra Party, Rastriya Prajatantra Party, Janta Samajwadi Party, Janamat Party and Nagarik Unmukti Party.

Likewise, Nepali Congress (NC) has fielded lawmaker Ishwari Neupane as its candidate for Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Lawmaker Neupane registered her nomination at the Federal Parliament Secretariat on Wednesday.

The House of Representatives (HoR) will then set the date for the election of the Deputy Speaker of the HoR.
