Sudurpaschim Province announces public holiday today

DHANGADHI: The Sudurpaschim Province has announced a public holiday in the province today, marking the occasion of the Olke festival.

This festival holds significance as it falls on the 1st day of the Nepali month of Bhadra, exclusively observed in Sudurpaschim Province.

The provincial government’s proclamation of this holiday is rooted in the Olke festival’s tradition of rejoicing in the aftermath of a divine disaster, symbolizing the triumphant emergence from the challenges brought by the monsoon.

‘Olke’, a term translating to ‘gift’ or ‘koseli’, encapsulates the essence of this celebration.

Central to this festival is the act of sharing fruits and partaking in sweet delicacies, while also adorning hands with intricate mehndi designs, signifying respect towards the older generation.

The Olke festival additionally serves as a reminder of the resilience displayed by the populace in overcoming prevalent rainy season ailments such as measles, diarrhea, cholera, and leprosy.

The holiday serves as an opportunity for the community to come together and reflect on their endurance in the face of adversity, as well as to honor the cultural traditions that bind them.
