Democratic thought becomes stronger provided based on ideals: first President Yadav

KATHMANDU: First President Dr Ram Baran Yadav has asserted that the future of democratic thought is secure as its basis, ideal and ideological foundation is stronger.

Addressing the inaugural program of the 12th national convention and the 25th annual general meeting of the Democratic Thought Society here today, he said democracy is under threat at present as the Nepali Congress, which reached the villages whenever there was any crisis in the country in the past is ‘vanishing’.

He recalled that the Nepali Congress had reached to the villages even when there were only 35 central committee members during the presidency of Girija Prasad Koirala.

“But now the party leaders and cadres were not reaching to the people even though there are 150 central members, which is the reason why democracy is in peril,” he rued.

The former President called on the Society members to be aware as democracy might be under threat due to the indolence on the part of the country’s oldest democratic party. He suggested the Society members to be critical to protect democracy.

Representatives from seven provinces and 70 districts are attending the general convention that will run till Thursday. The general convention will also elect a new working committee for the next term, said Dr Kedar Narsingh KC, the Society’s president.
