HoR polls: EC urges representatives to avoid campaigning

KATHMANDU: With only 10 days remaining before the election to the House of Representatives (HoR), the Election Commission (EC) has urged local-level people’s representatives not to take part in election campaigning.

The Commission said the appeal was made to ensure a free, fair, impartial, transparent, economical and fear-free electoral environment. Referring to the implementation of the Election Code of Conduct, 2082, it reminded all stakeholders that strict compliance with the code is their responsibility.

The Commission stated that it is closely monitoring whether political parties, candidates and other concerned bodies are fully adhering to the code of conduct. It noted that its serious attention has been drawn to complaints alleging that some local-level representatives have participated in campaign activities of political parties and candidates in violation of the code.

According to the code of conduct, local executive officials may engage in election campaigns of their respective political parties outside the local level where they currently hold office. However, they are strictly prohibited from using government resources, facilities or means for such activities.

The Commission has warned local executive officials not to participate in campaign activities within their own local level in any manner that contravenes the election code of conduct.
