Patan High Court issues Show Cause order against govt

KATHMANDU: The Patan High Court has issued a show cause order in the case against the cancellation of the license of Smart Telecom.

On Monday, the single bench of Judge Dipendra Bahadur Bam issued a show cause order in the name of the government.

Hearing the writ filed by Ramnath Vantha Tharu on behalf of Smart Telecom, the High court also issued an interim order to call both parties for discussion.

Smart Telecom went to the Patan High Court after the government revoked its license citing the private telecom operator did not reimburse Rs 28 billion in the government account.

The writ filed by Smart Telecom on April 13 against the office of the Prime Minister and Council of Ministers was heard on Monday.

The license given by the government to Smart Telecom was to be renewed by April 16 paying the prescribed fee. However, as Smart did not initiate the said process, its license was revoked automatically.

According to the spokesperson of Nepal Telecommunication Authority, Santosh Paudel, the deadline for this company to renew the license by paying the license fee was until yesterday.

Paudel said that Smart’s license was automatically revoked because they did not pay the license fee on that day and did not even initiate the process.
