PM Dahal emphasizes the role of multi-cultural democracy in strengthening national unity

KATHMANDU: Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ underscored the crucial role of a multi-cultural democratic society in fortifying national unity. Speaking at the concluding ceremony of the Naba Durga Bhawani Devi procession, a celebration held every twelve years, the Prime Minister emphasized the need to move forward with determination towards a more inclusive and diverse nation.

In his address, Prime Minister Dahal acknowledged Nepal’s status as a multi-ethnic, multi-lingual, and multi-cultural country, asserting that the recognition and preservation of cultural heritages play a special role in enhancing national unity. He highlighted the shared responsibility for the protection and promotion of culture, noting that Nepal’s constitution guarantees the right to each community to safeguard their language, script, cultural civilization, and heritage while maintaining religious freedom.

According to the Prime Minister, the material legacies left by ancestors and the corresponding way of life collectively form the national culture of Nepal. He expressed concern about certain forces attempting to spread illusions against the constitution and the democratic republic system, which institutionalizes cultural diversity, communal identities, and their rights. Prime Minister Dahal called for collective resistance at the grassroots level to counteract these forces and uphold the current governance system.

Furthermore, he urged efforts at the people’s level to protect cultures, identities, and honor, emphasizing the endeavor to build a society oriented towards socialism. On a different note, he extended best wishes for the success of the Bahrabarse Nawa Durga Jatra, recognizing its significant potential from religious, cultural, natural, and tourism perspectives.

Various traditional dances related to Nava Durga, representing the nine forms of Goddess Durga, adorned the occasion. CPN (Maoist Centre) leaders Rajkaji Maharjan and Bina Magar were among the dignitaries present at the event. The Prime Minister’s call for embracing and preserving cultural diversity echoes the ongoing efforts to foster unity in the rich tapestry of Nepal’s multi-faceted society.
