Transport to Manang restored after three days of disruption

MANANG: The Dumre-Besisahar-Chame road, the sole access route to Manang, has been restored following a three-day disruption caused by adverse weather conditions.

The road was resumed with the improvement in weather since Monday. The disruption had left tourists, tour guides and local employees travelling to the district stranded.

The road section had caved-in at Kharkhare of Besisahar municipality-6 in Lamjung due to rains.

With its resumption, vehicles have arrived here carrying medicines and daily essentials, according to District Police Office, Manang Chief, Rahamat Ansari.

It is noted that Manang is highly vulnerable to consequences of weather adversity, especially during the monsoon season.

If the monsoon-triggered disaster has its implications in the transport system in Manang known as the district beyond the Himalaya, it endures a halt in the supplies chain including of daily essentials.

According to Annapurna Area Conservation Project (ACAP) Manang Office chief, Lekhnath Gautam, amidst the daunting challenges posed by adverse weather, the district continues to welcome 14-15 tourists each day.

It seems that foreign tourists are accustomed to confronting the weather hurdles during travels.

Suman Adhikari, a sub-engineer for the Dumre-Besisahar-Chame Road Project Office, confirmed the restoration of the road.

“But still the movement via this road is not free from any potential disaster risk. However, it has been restored for the moment.”
