KATHMANDU: Rabi Lamichhane, the Chairman of Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), has expressed his disagreement with the government’s decision to shut down TikTok. He argued that instead of closing social networks, they should be regulated.
In response to the government’s move on Monday, Lamichhane took to social media, stating, “Social media should undergo regulation, not closure as the issue raised in TikTok ban lies in the content, not the platform.”
He emphasized the feasibility of technological control over inappropriate content, saying, “Malicious content can be managed technologically.” Lamichhane also pointed out that videos from TikTok can easily be shared on platforms like Reel, Instagram, and Facebook. He raised a critical question, “Should all platforms be closed?”
Lamichhane also questioned the decision-makers within the ruling party, stating, “Many leaders in the ruling party who endorsed this decision are corrupt. Does this mean the party will be shut down now?”
