Cash relief distributed to families of quake victims

RUKUM WEST: Cash relief has been distributed to the families of Rukum West, who died in the 6.4 magnitude earthquake that struck Jajarkot on November 3.

Starting from Sanibheri Rural Municipality, the cash distribution has been completed at Aathbiskot Municipality. As part of the cash distribution, families of 10 people killed in the quake from Sanibheri Rural Municipality-6 received Rs 1.6 million, and 20 families of the deceased received Rs 5.1 million, said Chief District Officer Hari Prasad Panta, also coordinator of the District Disaster Management Committee.

According to him, cash relief has been provided to the family members of 41 people killed in the disaster.

“Now 12 members of nine families are yet to get the cash relief as their documents are yet to be verified and out of them, five are from outside the district. Those from other districts will get cash relief from the quake-hit district after their documents are processed from their respective districts,” he said.

The distributed cash relief was received from the federal government. As per the government’s decision, the cash relief amounting to Rs 200,000 has been distributed to each family of a deceased, and Rs 300,000 to the family that lost more than one member in the quake, said Assistant Chief District Officer Prabesh Baduwal.

The federal government had released Rs 50 million to the District Disaster Relief Fund for the distribution of cash relief to the deceased’s families. The remaining amount to be distributed to 12 quake victims would be spent on temporary accommodation and rehabilitation of the quake victims, said Baduwal.

On November 3, an earthquake measuring 6.4 in magnitude hit Jajarkot and Rukum West with its epicenter at Ramidanda of Jajarkot.

More than 150 people lost their lives and around 200 people were injured in the quake. At least 30,000 houses, both public and private, were destroyed while more than 38,000 families have been affected.
