FIR lodged against Jailer and Assistant Inspector of Police in Sankhuwasabha Prisoners’ Death Case

SANKHUWASABHA: A formal complaint has been registered against the Jailer and the Assistant Inspector of Police regarding the deaths of two inmates within Sankhuwasabha jail.

Inspector Saroj Khanal, the spokesperson for the District Police Office Sankhuwasabha, conveyed that a complaint has been officially filed against Jailer Chief Rajendra Ghimire and Assistant Police Inspector Lakshmi Chaudhary at the District Police Office Sankhuwasabha on Saturday.

In the early hours of last Wednesday, two individuals were discovered unconscious within the Sankhuwasabha prison, situated in Khandbari Municipality-1. The two were identified as 20-year-old Binod Tolangi from Madi Municipality-5 and 27-year-old Bikas Shrestha from  Kakani-7, Nuwakot. They were subsequently transported to Khandwari District Hospital for medical attention.

Tragically, both individuals passed away during their treatment at the hospital.

It was revealed that both of them had made an attempt to escape the prison at approximately 1:30 AM. Upon noticing one of the inmates attempting to flee by manipulating the window bars of their lower-floor cell, the on-duty police personnel raised an alarm to alert others.

Police Inspector Khanal stated that both individuals were subjected to physical assault while being apprehended by the police staff. The officers were dispatched to the cell block where the inmates were housed, but they were also met with aggression from fellow prisoners.

Subsequently, in the morning, both inmates were discovered unconscious and regrettably lost their lives despite medical efforts.

Following this incident, the family of the victims lodged a formal complaint against both Assistant Inspector of Police Lakshmi Choudhary, who was on duty that night, and Jail Chief Rajendra Ghimire. This has led to the commencement of an investigation against the implicated individuals by the police.

Although autopsies on both deceased individuals have been concluded, the families have declined to accept the bodies.
