Garbage piled up in Singha Durbar reflects govt’s indifferent attitude: KMC Mayor Balen

KATHMANDU: Mayor of Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) Balen Shah has said that the garbage piled up in Singha Durbar is a reflection of the government’s noncompliant attitude.

“There is hardly any doubt that this pressure was necessary to make the government listen to people’s woes,” he said on his Facebook.

Shah said this pressure was necessary to bring attention to the issue and push for much-needed action from the government.

The KMC has not collected garbage from Singha Darbar since last Saturday alleging the government for non-cooperation.

Shah said that the issue of people’s problems raised by KMC has not progressed due to the lack of coordination by the government.

“The government seems to ignore the voice of the local government (KMC) that is 500 meters away from Singha Durbar,” Shah has written on his Facebook.

“In such a situation, imagine what would be the government’s attitude toward addressing the political impasse, conflicts, and problems in far-flung local levels?”, he has asked.

Mayor Shah also clarified that the decision to halt garbage collection from Singha Durbar was not impulsive but rather an outcome of prolonged efforts to seek the government’s cooperation.

Shah expressed disappointment, stating that it appeared as though the Federal Government was unwilling to collaborate with local governments, including the KMC.

“Even after 9 months of initiatives of repeated attempts, it has become extremely difficult to coordinate and implement coordinated things,” he said.
