Women participation in state structures on the rise: Minister Acharya

KATHMANDU: Minister for Women, Children and Senior Citizen Surendra Raj Acharya has said women’s participation in the state structures was increasing lately.

Speaking at an interaction program on the ‘Role of media-persons for equal participation’ organized here on Saturday by the Women Department, Nepal Press Union, the minister said there was the special legal provision for ensuring the rights of women in Nepal as compared to many other countries in the world.

“The government at the three levels has been implementing the issues of proportional and inclusive representation as ensured by the constitution. There is difficulty to end violence against women and ensure their representation only on the part of the government alone,” he said.

Stating that there will not be changes in the country until the way of treating women is not changed in the society, and their participation ensured, he maintained that the sector led by women has experienced least corruption.
“We must be serious about empowering women. Women also must enhance their efficiency along with the guarantee of their rights. The constitution has guaranteed women’s rights and their inclusion.”

Nepotism and favoritism are taking over in nook and cranny of the society in the name of giving women rights, he urged the media-persons to play a role in ending such deformity.

“Women’s education in the society is weak. There are conservative traditions widespread. Journalists are an intellectual group in the society. You must write against such conservative and wrong activities,” he viewed.
